The post Equine Worm Egg Test Kit appeared first on Davidsons Farm & Country.
]]>Years ago, horse owners had no other choice but to squirt a worming medicine into our horse’s mouths, which ended up with most of it down us and not in the horse, plus a resistance building up to the medicine (a little like us taking antibiotics when it’s not necessary, I guess).
A good worming programme is essential as parasitic infestation can do irreversible damage to the gut and other organs leading to poor condition, colic or even, sadly, fatalities.
In addition to this, good field management such as removing manure regularly and not putting too many horses together on pasture (so they are not forced to eat grass near manure) are just a few of the many things we can do to help. These days we can now do something rather technical called a ‘worm count’ rather than simply just using the worm medicine. So, what is a worm count? Well, quite simply it is a worm egg count of a small sample of manure to find out how many eggs are present in it. The results are shown as the number of eggs per gram. The lab I use let me know once they have tested the sample whether my mare has a low (under 200 eggs per gram), medium (200-1,200 eggs per gram) or a high count (over 1,200 eggs per count).
IS YOUR HORSE A PICTURE OF HEALTH ON THE INSIDE AS WELL AS THE OUTSIDE?
‘Think twice before using wormers’*
Worming advice has changed. Good worm control starts with using worm counts and tests, only adding wormer doses as they are needed.
Resistance to wormers
Horse worms are evolving to become resistant to some worming drugs, especially those which have been around for a long time. This means that we can no longer rely on keeping horses worm free purely by giving them wormers.
It’s much better to test first and target the wormers at the wormy horses and at specific seasonal problems like encysted redworms, bots and pinworm. Using wormers sparingly should also mean that they stay effective for those times when our horses really need them.
Using worm counts and tests
Whether you have a single horse kept on an individual turnout or run a busy yard with mixed turnout a targeted approach can work for you. Redworm, roundworm & tapeworm are the biggest pathological threats to horses and the parasites for which you should test regularly.

]]>Do not use Equest for sick or debilitated horses
For the most recent summary or characteristics for Equest horse wormer please follow link to the data sheet below.
Equest has the remarkably long duration of action worming horses for 13 weeks.
Use Equest Pramox wormer alternately with Equest every quarter for a years complete worming programme. Thats just four single doses a year, one for each season!
Over 90% of the small redworm in your horse can be encysted in its gut wall. Undetectable, horses can harbour tens of thousands of encysted small redworm with no visible illness (Love S et al, 1999). Killing these larvae before they emerge en masse and cause potentially fatal intestinal damage is an important part of any worm control programme.
Ivermectin, mebendazole and pyrantel-based wormers are simply not effective against encysted small redworm, and fenbendazole-based wormers require a 5-day course. With widespread small redworm resistance to fenbendazole, prevalent on over 80% of stables in the UK (Fisher M et al, 1992), and the fact that this 5-day course actually may increase the selection pressure for resistance amongst small redworm (Reinemeyer C et al, 2003), the use of fenbendazole for the control of encysted small redworm is not advisable where resistance is present (Coles G et al, 2003).
EQUEST is the only wormer to carry on killing small redworm larvae ingested while your horse grazes for a further two weeks after treatment, cleaning the pasture of this parasite and reducing your horse’s exposure to re-infection.
Larvae ingested by your horse as it grazes invade and accumulate in the horse’s gut wall. With warmer and wetter winters the peak periods for larval infestation have expanded resulting in the potential for larvae to be picked up late in the year (Love S, 2003). This accumulation of larvae during the grazing season causes damage and inflammation to the horse’s gut wall resulting in weight loss, as well as having the potential to cause life-threatening illness (Love S et al, 1999).
EQUEST has no confirmed resistance in horses in the UK or Ireland.
EQUEST is kind to the environment. With lower toxicity to dung dwelling insects than ivermectin-based wormers, insects can carry on cleaning the pasture of dung.
Millions of doses of EQUEST have been safely given to horses of all kinds and research has shown it is safe to use in pregnant and lactating mares, stallions and foals over four months of age.

The horses weight should be accurately determined to ensure use of the correct dose of product.
The animals mouth must be free of food. The wormer should be placed between the front and back teeth and the paste deposited at the base of the tongue. Immediately elevate the head for a few seconds to ensure that the product is swallowed. Re-treatment should be carried out according to the epidemiological situation and at not less than 30 day intervals. Eraquell may be used in pregnant mares.

The post Embotape Gel appeared first on Davidsons Farm & Country.
]]>Uses
Pyrantel embonate is a broad spectrum anthelmintic. Pyrantel embonate is indicated for use in the horse for the control and treatment of adult infections of large and small strongyles, Pinworms, Roundworms, Tapeworms.
Pyrantel embonate has a broad spectrum of activity, including activity against:
Large strongyles:Stronglylus vulgaris, S. edentatus, S. equinus.
Small strongyles: Trichonema spp. (Cyathostomes), Triodontophorus spp.
Pinworms: Oxyuris equi, Probstmayria vivipara.
Large roundworms: Parascaris equorum.
Tape worms: Anoplocephala perfoliata
HOW TO USE
For the treatment and control of adult infestations of large and small redworms, ascarids and pinworms Embotape should be used at a dose rate of 19 mg pyrantel embonate per kg bodyweight. The complete content of one syringe contains 11.4g pyrantel embonate in 28.5g paste and is sufficient for the treatment of 600kg bodyweight. Each graduation of the syringe is sufficient for the treatment of 100kg bodyweight.
For the control and treatment of tapeworm Embotape should be used at a dose rate of 38mg pyrantel embonate per kg bodyweight (ie twice the dose used for strongyles). This means if using to cover tapeworm one graduation is sufficient for the treatment of 50kg. A 600kg horse would hence require two full syringes.
